Why Are We Passionate About Matter?

An engineering team’s honest answer.

We’ve watched a lot of «universal standards» promise to fix the smart home mess. Most of them made it worse: one more logo on the box, one more app on your phone, one more thing to explain to a client who just wanted the lights to work. Matter is the first one we’ve actually believed.

That’s not a marketing line. It’s the honest answer you’d get if you sat down with our engineers over coffee and asked why a bunch of electrical engineers spent two years betting on a protocol most homeowners had never heard of.

The Old Rules of the Game

For as long as our industry has existed, «smart home» has meant a shelf of remote controls in disguise. A speaker system that only talks to itself. A lighting brand that only talks to itself. A blind motor, a thermostat, a door lock: each one fluent in its own private language, each one requiring its own app, its own hub, its own patience. Ask an installer what the job actually was for twenty years, and most of them will tell you: translator, not engineer.

We started the company watching that mess from the outside: installers stuck translating between systems that were never meant to talk, homeowners paying for hardware that worked beautifully in isolation and terribly together. We didn’t want to add one more closed system to that pile.

The Bet We Made Early

So when Matter showed up, still rough, still short on devices that actually existed, we made a call that felt slightly reckless at the time: build for it anyway. Make our KNX Bridge ready for Matter before Matter was ready for prime time. Bet the roadmap on the idea that Apple, Google, Amazon and Samsung (companies that agree on almost nothing) would actually keep their word on this one.

It was not the safe choice. It’s the choice you make when you’re more excited about where an industry is going than comfortable with where it currently is.

The Numbers That Convinced Us We Weren’t Wrong

We didn’t just believe in Matter. We watched it, the way you watch a bet you’ve already placed.

The number of devices certified for Matter went from roughly 130 in 2021 to over 10,400 by 2024, an 80x increase in three years. Every major manufacturer that used to build a closed little kingdom now ships Matter-ready hardware as the default, not the exception.

That’s not a niche standard gaining traction. That’s an entire industry admitting, all at once, that the old way was never going to scale.

Why It Actually Matters to Us

Here’s the part that’s harder to put in a spec sheet: Matter is the first standard that let us stop asking installers to be translators.

A KNX system that’s run a building reliably since the 1990s can now sit in the same app as a Google Home thermostat, an Apple Home lock, and an Alexa automation. Not because someone built a clever workaround, but because, for once, the industry agreed on the language before we had to.

That’s the whole reason this gets our engineers genuinely excited, in a way a lot of «innovation» doesn’t. We didn’t build a bridge because it was clever. We built it because Matter finally gave us somewhere real to build it to.

The Real Reason

We’re not passionate about Matter because it’s trendy. Trends come and go, we’ve already buried a few dead standards, and we won’t lose sleep over the next one either.

We’re passionate about it because, for the first time in twenty years, the person living in the house came first, not the brand on the box. That’s rare enough to build a company around.

So we build like there’s no going back.

Atios builds the bridge between the world’s most proven building standards (KNX and DALI) and the ecosystems you already live in: Apple Home and Google Home, through Matter. Fully local, no cloud dependency, no monthly fees.
