4 KNX Bridges Compared

A KNX installation is reliable and built to last. The most important thing after that is everyday convenience for the customer: an app with an easy-to-use interface, voice and remote control. 
This article compares four KNX Bridges: the Atios KNX Bridge, the 1Home Server, Thinka for KNX and the Gira X1. They are devices that sit between the KNX bus and, in this case, an app interface.

The Atios KNX Bridge bridges KNX to Matter and to Apple Home natively, includes the KNX IP interface for ETS, and has a KNX-DALI gateway built in. It runs on Power over Ethernet or Wi-Fi, supports KNX Secure and the official ETS Cloud Interface, and is set up in a web interface.

The 1Home Server is a platform with its own control app and an automation engine. It bridges KNX to Matter as well. It does not support KNX Secure and has no DALI gateway. Remote access for ETS runs through 1Home's cloud servers.

Thinka for KNX is built around native Apple HomeKit and was the first KNX bridge certified for it. Matter is available in beta. DALI needs a separate gateway. The KNX IP interface and VPN remote access come with the Pro version, KNX Secure as a separate product or upgrade.

The Gira X1 is a visualisation and logic server with a full app, floor plans and voice control via Alexa and Google. It has no Matter support. DALI needs a separate Gira gateway, and remote access for ETS requires the additional S1 module.

Why we built the KNX Bridge the way we did

We wanted this device to be the heart of a KNX installation, the place where everything comes together: the wired KNX line for switching, shading, heating and security, DALI for the lighting, and Matter for apps, voice assistants and IoT devices. Just one box in the cabinet. Fewer devices means fewer things that can fail, one web interface for commissioning and troubleshooting, and one place for DALI addressing and Matter bridge configuration.

We decided not to build our own visualisation on purpose. Apple, Google and Amazon have large teams on their apps. They constantly ship updates, handle accounts, family sharing, remote access, voice control and automations. And they will most likely still be doing that in ten years. It's almost impossible for a small vendor's app not to lag behind. On top of that, integrators earn their money with the installation and the commissioning. They do not want to be first-line support for an app for years and it is not their expertise. With Matter, the customer uses the app they already know, they can create their own scenes and control runs locally in the home network without a cloud from us in between.

Our KNX Bridge started as a Matter bridge for KNX and a KNX-DALI gateway. The other features were added later, after we realised what we needed in our own installations. 
And we will keep adding features as firmware updates, so a bridge bought years ago gets the same functions as one bought today.
